The busyness of everyday life can sometimes become overwhelming and one needs to find a way to break away from it all.
One place that I have found to enjoy a peaceful and quiet atmosphere in, is Intaka Island in Century City. Intaka means “bird” in Xhosa and this beautiful 16-hectare wetlands and bird sanctuary site houses approximately 120 species of birds. There are also over 170 species of indigenous fynbos found.
Intaka is a great place to be if you want to learn more about the environment and how to preserve it. It is perfect for a morning or afternoon stroll. There are enough benches scattered around the island should you want to sit down and relax and have a quick bite to eat before you explore further. Nature lovers will surely enjoy the time spent at Intaka Island. There are pathways and clearly marked signage with directions of where to go next.
They are open everyday, except on Christmas Day. Their visiting hours depends on the season. During the winter season (May – Sep) their hours are 08h00 – 17h30. During summer (Oct – Apr) their operating hours are 08h00 – 19h00.
The entrance fees are very affordable as shown below:
Adult – R25 with boat ride R75
Children (under 12) – R15 with boat ride R65
Pensioners – R15 (with boat ride) R65
It is essential to book for a boat ride, but you don’t have to book if you only want to take a walk around the island.
Please note that, because it is currently the winter season, the boat rides are on a break from 1 June 2021 – September 2021.
Intaka caters for school groups as well. You may contact them if you want to find out more about booking for a school group. Please visit their website at www.intaka.co.za or contact them on +2721 552 6889 to find out about the activities they have to offer for school groups. Their email address is email@example.com.
Intaka Island is not just a place that you can only visit once. You will want to visit many times, because there will always be something that you perhaps haven’t seen the first of second time around. You are able to take beautiful photos of this truly “dream destination” as I call it. After the visit you can even do your shopping at the nearby Century City Shopping Centre. It is so close and very convenient.
I am definitely making my visits to Intaka regular ones.
